Original OEM Ford part

Due to the ease of installation and relatively high cost,   we would recommend replacement only when necessary and not simply as a preventative measure during the 60K/100K service.  

Many supposed DIS module failures are simply insufficient grounding.
Be sure that your existing module is properly grounded through it's mounting bolts,  and also be sure that the intake manifold end tank/crossover tank is also properly grounded through it's two mounting bolts.
The DIS module should have a thin layer of heat-sink paste on the back.
 

Typical symptoms of failure can include misfiring,  stalling,  and rough running,  but of course these can also be caused by other issues.   Usually a trouble code will be set during failure,  causing the "check engine" light to come on.
If you're troubleshooting a driveability issue,  always start by checking and diagnosing the stored diagnostic trouble codes.

"The ICM (ignition control module) receives the CKP signal from the crankshaft position sensor,  the CMP signal from the camshaft position sensor,  and the SPOUT (spark out) signal from the PCM (computer).
During normal operation,  CKP is sent to the PCM from the crankshaft timing sensor and provides base timing and RPM information.
The CMP signal provides the ICM with the information required to synchronize the ignition coils so that they are fired in the proper sequence.
The SPOUT signal contains the optimum spark timing and dwell time information.
The spark angle is determined by the rising edge of SPOUT;  this is when coil current "turns off" and spark occurs.
The dwell time is controlled by varying the duty cycle (duration) of the SPOUT signal.  
Current flows in a coil (dwell) when SPOUT is "low".   This feature is called computer controlled dwell (CCD).  

With the proper inputs of CKP, CMP, and SPOUT,  the ICM turns the ignition coils on and off in the proper sequence for spark control."

Typical symptoms of failure can include pre-ignition/detonation (pinging/knocking) under part-throttle or full-throttle conditions,   but of course this can also be caused by other issues (poor fuel quality,  excessively lean fuel/air mixture,  carbon buildup in combustion chamber, overheating, etc.).   Usually a trouble code will be set during failure,  causing the "check engine" light to come on.
If you are troubleshooting a driveability issue,  always start by checking and diagnosing the trouble codes.

"The knock sensor is a piezoelectric accelerometer with the sensor designed to resonate at approximately the same frequency as the engine knock frequency.   The sensor uses this resonant frequency to mechanically amplify the vibrations.  This method allows relatively large signals to be achieved without electrical amplification.   The PCM (powertrain control module- computer) uses information provided by this sensor to retard ignition timing in the event that excessive knocking is detected.    This sensor has a thin circular piezoelectric ceramic disc which is bonded to a metal diaphragm."

Typical symptoms of failure can include bucking and stalling with a no-start condition (indefinitely,  or will sometimes restart and run normally after 30-90min),  loss of tach signal,  etc. but of course these can also be caused by other issues.   Usually a trouble code will be set during failure,  causing the "check engine" light to come on.
If you're troubleshooting a driveability issue,  always start by checking and diagnosing the trouble codes.

"The crankshaft position sensor is a single Hall-effect magnetic switch,  which is activated by three vanes on the crankshaft timing pulley.   The signal generated by this sensor is called "PIP" (profile ignition pickup), also "CKP" (crankshaft position).   The PIP/CKP signal provides base timing and RPM information to the DIS module and the EEC4 module.
Base timing is set at10 degrees BTDC (before top dead center) and is not adjustable"

Typical symptoms of failure can include part-throttle pinging, but of course this can also be caused by other issues. Usually a trouble code will be set during failure, causing the "check engine" light to come on (may not always stay on, but a code has been set once it comes on).
If you're troubleshooting a driveability issue, always start by checking and diagnosing the trouble codes.
"The EGR flow rate is determined by monitoring the pressure across a fixed metering orifice as exhaust gasses pass through it. The DPFE system monitors this flow across the orifice directly by supplying the DPFE sensor with a pressure signal before the orifice (upstream pressure) and a pressure signal after the orifice (downstream pressure). This pressure difference translates to a specific EGR flow which the DPFE sensor signals to the PCM (powertrain control module- computer) by means of an analog voltage signal. This signal to the PCM increases linearly as the differential pressure increases. With this signal the PCM can then optimize EGR flow rate by varying the EVR solenoid duty cycle."

The rod bearings are an Achilles heel of the SHO V6.
They can be replaced with the engine "in-car" as a preventative measure (strongly recommended), or during an engine rebuild/overhaul.

Please check your clearances with Plastigauge or a micrometer.
If you have a severe rod knock, it is likely that your crankshaft will need to be machined (and "undersize" bearings used) to return clearances to within specifications, and/or the connecting rod "big ends" reconditioned/resized to obtain proper bearing "crush",  which is what holds the bearings in place and keeps them from spinning (not the locating tabs).
